   About Us

Larger metropolitan libraries and municipalities benefit from trained and salaried staff to support their photo and document image collection preservation, archiving, and sharing activities.  Families and volunteers at local community historical societies must develop their own "how to" knowledge to perform these tasks.

Through accumulation, inheritance, or donation, many of us have acquired disorganized and poorly stored photos and documents that are a valued record of our family or community past.  Properly organizing, storing, archiving, and sharing our collected images can seem overwhelming.  Regardless of the complexity of the collection(s), with a clearer understanding of basic preservation principles and the technology available to preserve and share our images, the non-professional can accomplish much.

LocalArchiver.Com is intended to be a concise, and easy to use guide to planning and prioritizing photo and document preservation and sharing projects for the non-professional.  We hope this information is helpful in your efforts to preserve and share your treasured images and historical heritage.

   About Me

Me at Beach

I am an amateur photographer, collector of vintage postcards, frequent visitor to community historical societies, owner of a computer full of digital images, and recent inheritor of many boxes of family photos & documents.  For these reasons, I was destined to do some research on how to best organize, preserve, and share photo and document images.

Early research led me to conclude that much of the information available covers a narrow topic or is intended for image handling professionals.  It became clear that the challenge I faced in "connecting the dots" was likely faced by other non-professionals.

There are clearly differences of opinion about how to "best" accomplish various image preservation and sharing goals.  In LocalArchiver.com articles, I have tried to consolidate information and recommendations from others and my own experiences to present guidance that should work for the majority of families and community historical society volunteers.

If you have additional suggestions or differ in your views, I would like to hear from you, as this site is expected to be dynamic as technology changes and I expand the topics within the overall theme.

I hope you find the site useful.

Regards,

Rick Anderson
